Former world number 1 Azarenka is embracing the pressure as seeded players fall around her in the 2016 Australian Open. There is only one top 10 seeded player left in the bottom half of the draw, with no 3 ranked Garbine Muguruza losing her third round to number 48 ranked Barbora Strycova.
The highest ranked player, Angelique Kerber ranked number 7, is now the only player left in the bottom half of the Australian Tennis Open. Number 3 ranked Muguruza, Karpolina Pliskiva fell to Ekaterina Makarova. Earlier in the week number 2 ranked Simona Halep as well as Venus Williams, currently ranked number 8 both lost their first rounds.
Muguruza and Halep later said they were under pressure in the grand slam tournament, the Spaniard said she had a very bad day against number 48 ranked Strycova. Last year Muguruza reached the final at Wimbledon but lost in the second round of the U.S Open to British player Johanna Konta.
In an interview Azarenka told the press that she embraces the pressure and think it is part of where she comes from, she said she was always under pressure. She also shared that she had only one shot to get out of where she was, and that was way more pressure than what she is under now. She thinks the pressure actually motivates her. She acknowledged that everyone is nervous before a match and that it is what you do with it that matters, you could use it to your advantage by using that adrenaline to your power.
Azarenka said that she does not pay attention to the seeds falling as it just shows a little bit of the depth of the competition, what she really tries to do is to be ready for every match.
